Adopted 12/12/1990; Revised 11/13/2002
Jefferson County Library District considers services to children and young adults to be a high priority. Although the District provides its young patrons with access to all materials and services, a youth service librarian on the staff ensures that expert help and guidance is available to younger patrons. Jefferson County Library District also provides support for youth services through professional materials selection, reference support, and reader’s advisory assistance.
Programs for pre-school and school age children are an important part of our service effort. Outreach activities play a key role because they take our services into the broader community to reach children who might not otherwise use the Library District.
Jefferson County Library District collections and services support rather than duplicate the role of school libraries, although our collection supports students in the completion of homework assignments. The Jefferson County Library District emphasizes the promotion of reading and supports the teaching of library skills. We teach library skills so that young people may learn to independently make use of all the District's resources to find information. We encourage reading for pleasure to support lifelong learning, skill development, and personal enrichment.
