Great Decisions: The Rise of Populism in Europe
April 18 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Great Decisions, produced by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), is America’s largest civic discussion program on world affairs. Lectures will run weekly each Thursday from March 28 – May 16. Each discussion will cover a topic of great importance to Americans, a short video will be shown, and discussion of American policy will be facilitated. Attend the entire series of lectures or one lecture; no previous registration is required, and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The program series is co-sponsored by Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s Adult Learning Program.
This week’s topic is mass migration and the problems associated with it, which have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit, it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s, and propelled Marine Le Pen to win a third of the vote in the French presidential election. In addition to calling for stronger borders, however, these parties are invariably illiberal, anti-American, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin, making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States.
